Music Doing Good In Schools
Music Doing Good in Schools is a musical theatre program with a focus on developing social and emotional learning skills.
Over the course of an entire school year, students explore the multifaceted aspects of theatre, from dance, music, acting, playwriting, costuming, make up and more. Throughout the program, students collaborate with each other and with our staff to create an end of year performance featuring original music, lyrics, and choreography.
Music Doing Good in Schools is able to offer our students a focused combination of arts enrichment and character education. We understand that some of our students experience extremely difficult personal situations, including family health concerns, domestic abuse, drug and alcohol addiction, homelessness, poverty, and more. Luckily, there are no barriers for students to participate, regardless of artistic experience or home situation; if the student is dedicated to learning and willing to put in the work, Music Doing Good is there for them!
The staff uses differentiated instruction to address individual student needs, on an artistic, academic, and social and emotional level. Students are encouraged to be a part of the program, regardless of experience level or home life. The program offers enrichment and character education, and provides a safe environment for self-expression. Students are encouraged to take risks and stretch far beyond their comfort zones. We witness dramatic transformations with many of our students. Grades improve, distracting behavior declines, shy children emerge from their shells, students grow as performers, and life skills are developed.
Throughout the course of the program, students grow as team members as well as individuals. Through collaboration and group creativity, students establish trust within their peer groups. The program fosters peer to peer learning and mentorship. Using TEKS aligned curriculum, arts integration and social and emotional learning (SEL), students are given the tools to emerge as leaders.
Program Director Aisha Ussery, M.Ed. brings over a decade of educational experience in the classroom, and even longer as a playwright, musician, choreographer, performer and director. Her skills and training allow her to empower, educate and transform the lives of students.
We educate children by sparking interest, using fun pedagogy, and by modeling practical and purposeful skills through unconventional methods.
We validate students by honoring their individual characteristics, by providing a safe environment and by instilling strategies and skills for success.
We showcase original student works and create productions that fully utilize students’ talents. The children will captivate audiences by creating a multi-sensory performance.
