Music Doing Good and the President’s Leadership Council hosted their final concert of 2016 to raise money for the College-Bound Fund. The show was sold out, and guests included Mayor of Houston, Sylvester Turner, and famed music manager, Matthew Knowles. The evening featured performances from 14 students from Music Doing Good outreach programs, performing pieces by Beethoven, Gershwin, Louis Armstrong, and more. The program also included the debut of a new original piece by Aaron Kaufman.
Many of the students came from KIPP Sharp, a school with which Music Doing Good with Instruments has formed a community partnership. We have donated many stringed instruments to their orchestra program and work closely with the teachers to cover the needs of the students as they arise. Orchestra Director, Lee Rivera remarked after the performance, “The students and I had such a wonderful time. They have been talking about it ever since. It really was a fantastic experience for the kids, and they felt so welcome and appreciated. I am so excited by the relationship between your amazing organization and my orchestra program. I hope we can continue to build on this experience and have even more opportunities to collaborate. Thanks again for all that you do!”
The President’s Leadership Council (PLC) is a group of community leaders dedicated to providing music scholarships to Houston’s economically challenged students. The PLC believes in the transformative power of music and its positive societal impact on individuals, families, schools and communities. The members raise money for the President’s Leadership Council College-Bound Fund, which awards 4-year scholarships to students studying music at Texas Southern University, University of St. Thomas and University of Houston, and 2-year scholarships to students studying music at Houston Community College. These scholarships are based on financial need. Donors are invited to attend musical showcases that highlight the children we serve through Music Doing Good’s outreach programs.
